I promised to post this interview up many months ago but totally forgot! I recorded this for my G’Day World show but though you might all enjoy it as well.

Tim Freke is the co-author (with his writing partner Peter Gandy) of many books about the Jesus myth – including THE JESUS MYSTERIES and THE LAUGHING JESUS. I chatted with him recently about one of their books “The Gospel of the Second Coming”, a marvelous book that manages to combine humour and insight – it explains the Jesus myth as a Gnostic parable. As Tim points out during our chat – nobody really thinks there was an historical “good Samaritan” or “prodigal son”. They are understood to be parables. Tim explains that the whole Jesus story is a series of parables wrapped up in another parable – the parable of Jesus himself.

In other news, I got a phone call from His Bobness this morning. He sounds fit and healthy but said he’s getting old and feeling it at the gym. Always great to hear his voice. I didn’t even mind that he woke me up. :-)

It was during one of his ambles that he had his epiphany.

“It happened on a May morning — I have forgotten the year — but I can still point to the exact spot where it occurred, on a forest path on Martinsberg above Baden,” he wrote in “LSD: My Problem Child.” “As I strolled through the freshly greened woods filled with bird song and lit up by the morning sun, all at once everything appeared in an uncommonly clear light.

“It shone with the most beautiful radiance, speaking to the heart, as though it wanted to encompass me in its majesty. I was filled with an indescribable sensation of joy, oneness and blissful security.”

I tell ya, grabbing some land and putting up a building in SL is very exciting. I’m buzzing!!

Bob first gave me a copy of this 20 years ago and I still find it to be the clearest writing on “this” that I’ve ever read. As far as I’m concerned, once you’ve heard the Xin Xin Ming, there is nothing left to ask, do or say.

According to Wikipedia:

Xinxin Ming (Xin Xin Ming) (信心銘) (Wade-Giles: Hsin Hsin Ming; Japanese: Shinjinmei (or Shinjin no Mei)) a verse attributed to the Third Chinese Chan (Zen) Patriarch Jianzhi Sengcan 僧璨(?-606) (Wade-Giles: Chien-chih Seng-ts’an; Japanese: Kanchi Sosan), is one of the earliest Chinese Chan expressions of the Buddhist mind training practice. While it has been interpreted as “faith in mind” as opposed to the more common Buddhist faiths present at the time—faith in the Buddha, in the Dharma and in the Sangha, another interpretation suggested by Ho(see below) takes Xinxin (信心) to mean the truthful mind. Still other translations include: Inscription on Trust in the Mind, Verses on the Faith Mind, and On Believing in Mind, as well as others. John McRae (1986:316 n. 64) argues that the title should be translated as “Inscription on Relying on the Mind” or “Inscription of the Perfected Mind”.

The Great Way is not difficult

for those who have no preferences.

When love and hate are both absent

everything becomes clear and undisguised.

Make the smallest distinction, however,

and heaven and earth are set infinitely apart.

If you wish to see the truth

then hold no opinions for or against anything.

To set up what you like against what you dislike

is the disease of the mind.

When the deep meaning of things is not understood,

the mind’s essential peace is disturbed to no avail.

The Way is perfect like vast space

where nothing is lacking and nothing is in excess.

Indeed, it is due to our choosing to accept or reject

that we do not see the true nature of things.

Live neither in the entanglements of outer things,

nor in inner feelings of emptiness.

Be serene in the oneness of things and such

erroneous views will disappear by themselves.

When you try to stop activity by passivity

your very effort fills you with activity.

As long as you remain in one extreme or the other

you will never know Oneness.

Those who do not live in the single Way

fail in both activity and passivity,

assertion and denial.

To deny the reality of things

is to miss their reality;

To assert the emptiness of things

is to miss their reality.

The more you talk and think about it,

the further astray you wander from the truth.

Stop talking and thinking,

and there is nothing you will not be able to know.

To return to the root is to find meaning,

but to pursue appearances is to miss the source. icon

At the moment of inner enlightenment

there is a going beyond appearance and emptiness.

The changes that appear to occur in the empty world

we call real only because of our ignorance.

Do not search for the truth;

only cease to cherish opinions.

Do not remain in the dualistic state.

Avoid such pursuits carefully.

If there is even a trace of this and that,

of right and wrong,

the mind-essence will be lost in confusion.

Although all dualities come from the One,

do not be attached even to this One.

When the mind exists undisturbed in the Way,

nothing in the world can offend.

And when a thing can no longer offend,

it ceases to exist in the old way.

When no discriminating thoughts arise,

the old mind ceases to exist.

When thought objects vanish,

the thinking-subject vanishes:

As when the mind vanishes, objects vanish.

Things are objects because of the subject (mind):

the mind (subject) is such because of things (object).

Understand the relativity of these two

and the basic reality: the unity of emptiness.

In this Emptiness the two are indistinguishable

and each contains in itself the whole world.

If you do not discriminate between coarse and fine

you will not be tempted to prejudice and opinion.

To live in the Great Way is neither easy nor difficult.

But those with limited views are fearful and irresolute:

the faster they hurry, the slower they go.

And clinging (attachment) cannot be limited:

Even to be attached to the idea of enlightenment

is to go astray.

Just let things be in their own way

and there will be neither coming nor going.

Obey the nature of things (your own nature)

and you will walk freely and undisturbed.

When the thought is in bondage the truth is hidden

for everything is murky and unclear.

And the burdensome practice of judging

brings annoyance and weariness.

What benefit can be derived

from distinctions and separations?

If you wish to move in the One Way

do not dislike even the world of senses and ideas.

Indeed, to accept them fully

is identical with enlightenment.

The wise man strives to no goals

but the foolish man fetters himself.

There is one Dharma, not many.

Distinctions arise

from the clinging needs of the ignorant.

To seek Mind with the (discriminating) mind

is the greatest of all mistakes.

Rest and unrest derive from illusion;

with enlightenment

there is no liking and disliking.

All dualities come from ignorant inference.

They are like dreams or flowers in air -

foolish to try to grasp them.

Gain and loss, right and wrong,

such thoughts must

finally be abolished at once.

If the eye never sleeps,

all dreams will naturally cease.

If the mind makes no discriminations,

the ten thousand things are as they are,

of single essence.

To understand the mystery of this One-essence

is to be released from all entanglements.

When all things are seen equally

the timeless Self-essence is reached,

No comparisons or analogies are possible

in this causeless, relationless state.

Consider movement stationary

and the stationary in motion,

both movement and rest disappear.

When such dualities cease to exist

Oneness itself cannot exist.

To this ultimate finality

no law or description applies.

For the unified mind in accord with the way

all self-centered striving ceases.

Doubts and irresolutions vanish

and life in true faith is possible.

With a single stroke we are freed from bondage:

Nothing clings to us and we hold to nothing.

All is empty, clear, self-illuminating,

with no exertion of the mind’s power.

Here thought, feeling,

knowledge and imagination are of no value.

In this world of suchness

there is neither self nor other-than-self.

To come directly into harmony with this reality

just say when doubt rises “not two”.

In this “not two” nothing is separate,

nothing is excluded.

No matter when or where,

enlightenment means entering this truth.

And this truth is beyond extension

or diminution in time and space:

In it a single thought is ten thousand years.

Emptiness here, emptiness there,

but the infinite universe

stands always before your eyes.

Infinitely large and infinitely small;

no difference, for definitions have vanished

and no boundaries are seen.

So too with Being and non-Being.

Don’t waste time in doubts and arguments

That have nothing to do with this.

One thing, all things,

move among and intermingle without distinction.

To live in this realization

is to be without anxiety about non-perfection.

To live in this faith is the road to non-duality,

because the non-dual is one with the trusting mind.

Words!

The Way is beyond language,

for in it there is

no yesterday

no tomorrow

no today.

Thinker, philosopher UG Krishnamurti dead.

BANGALORE: Thinker and philosopher UG Krishnamurti has died at Vallecrossia in Italy aged 89.

Krishnamurti, lovingly called UG by his friends and admirers, had slipped and injured himself seven weeks ago and was bedridden, his friends said.

UG’s longtime friends filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, Larry and Susan Morris and a few other friends were by his side when he died two days ago.

Krishnamurti, who had moved to Italy in January, suffered from “cardio spasm” for many years which became quite severe in the last days of his life.

As per his advice, no rituals or funeral rites were conducted, and he did not leave instructions on how to dispose of his body, his friend and admirer AP Frank Noronha said.

The cremation was carried out by Mahesh Bhatt on Friday.

UG is survived by two daughters and a son.

From 1947 to 1953, U.G. regularly attended talks given by Jiddu Krishnamurti in Madras, finally beginning a direct dialogue with J. Krishnamurti in 1953. U.G. describes one of their meetings as follows:

“We really didn’t get along well. Whenever we met we locked horns over some issue or other. For instance, I never shared his concern for the world, or his belief that his teaching would profoundly affect the thoughts and actions of mankind for the next five hundred years–a fantasy of the Theosophist occultists. In one of our meetings I told Krishnamurti, ‘I am not called upon to save the world.’ He asked, ‘The house is on fire–what will you do?’ ‘Pour more gasoline on it and maybe something will rise from the ashes,’ I remarked. Krishnamurti said, ‘You are absolutely impossible.’ Then I said, ‘You are still a Theosophist. You have never freed yourself from the World Teacher role. There is a story in the Avadhuta Gita which talks of the avadhut who stopped at a wayside inn and was asked by the innkeeper, “What is your teaching?” He replied, “There is no teacher, no teaching and no one taught.” And then he walked away. You too repeat these phrases and yet you are so concerned with preserving your teaching for posterity in its pristine purity.’”

Their dialogues continued, but finally came to a halt. U.G. describes the final discussion as follows:

“Again I asked him if there was anything behind the abstractions he was throwing at me, ‘Come clean for once.’ Then he said with great force, ‘You have no way of knowing it!’ Then I said, ‘If I have no way of knowing it and you have no way of communicating it, what the hell have we been doing! I have wasted seven years listening to you. You can give your precious time to somebody else. I am leaving for New York tomorrow.’”

After the break with J .Krishnamurti, U.G. went to the United States seeking medical treatment for his son, and stayed there for 5 years.

“What Did It”

An acquaintance told me

If you are a fan of Cohen’s songs or poetry, I highly recommend the book. Many of the poems in this collection were written during his ten year retreat at the Zen Center on Mount Baldy. They focus mostly on zen studies and erotic relationships, two subjects which always go together in my mind.

“Screw enlightenment, brother Cameron – will this advaita schtick get a Qantas stewardess grabbing me by the back of my head and screaming my name over and over in an aircraft lavatory at 35,000 feet?” (and if you don’t know what I’m talking about, read this.)

Mark Hallett, a researcher with the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, said, “Free will does exist, but it’s a perception, not a power or a driving force. People experience free will. They have the sense they are free.

“The more you scrutinize it, the more you realize you don’t have it,” he said.

That is hardly a new thought. The German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer said, as Einstein paraphrased it, that “a human can very well do what he wants, but cannot will what he wants.”

I’m hanging out in Carmel, California with my peep Steve Witt (who was on the show back in January) and he WON’T SHUT UP ABOUT ADVAITA so I thought I might as well turn the microphone on and record some of it. We’ve been laughing so hard about the whole thing it’s been a lot of fun. So there is no Bob on this show, no Eliot, nobody who is enlightened, nobody who has “the understanding”, nobody at all in fact. Just a couple of dudes, sitting drinking tequila, having a laugh.

Wow, I couldn’t believe it when I realized it’s been three weeks since you’ve had your dose of advaita goodness. I know there are other sources of advaita out there, but surely you all agree that this show is the most advaita of all advaita shows? We out-advaita the lot of ‘em.

Anyway… enough bullshit, let’s get on with it.

The main themes today were about small “i” versus big “I”, holding ones breath, and orgies. Yes, you read right, ORGIES. Laya has some experience in that area and once you’ve heard her accent, you’ll agree with me that she has a HUGE career as a guru ahead of her if she combines the accent with the orgies. I, the true I, masquarading as an imaginary entity known as “Cameron Reilly”, will, to the best of “my” ability, which, as we all know, is ZERO because there is no entity to have “free will”, carry out the bidding of the Intelligence Energy next “Tuesday” (time being a concept) and will NOT use my iPod to record the show. I (the true there-is-only-one-without-a-second “I”, not the imaginary “me”, will use my (again, subjective relative concept, the phenomenon of the noumenon-which-I-am) laptop. I (true “I” again) will also (again, within the limits of the complete lack of volition that this non-entity has) faithfully continue to act the part of the foolish questioner for the benefit (nothing to gain, no-one to become, nothing to do, no path, you are already that which you seek) of the audience, even though I (true “I”) have been convinced for quite some years now that there is no entity called “Cameron” and that everything else concerning “life”, “the Universe”, and “Everything” is just a great way to spend “time” talking about nothing to no-one, selling books, pretending to be gurus, smiling serenely, etc. :-)

Eliot just emailed me to tell me he didn’t get to record a show with Bob this week. He is sorrier than Dick Cheney but them’s the breaks. Geeeez, between my iPod frakups, and Eliot’s miss, the intelligence energy must REALLY hate you people! What have you done to piss it off so much lately???

SO…

Here’s what I’m going to do.

Because I know you are all hanging out for your little burst of enlightenment this week, like rabid zombies who haven’t eaten human flesh in a week, I’m going to ring his Bobness in the morning and see if I can get 30 minutes with him on the phone or in person tomorrow. See if he can slip me into his busy schedule of … you know… being in nirvana and dealing with pathetic seekers trying to kiss his feet.

If he can fit me in, I will re-schedule my entire day around getting some enlightenment nourishment for you crazy people.

If he cannot see me tomorrow, then you’re just going to have to make do with the 2nd tier enlightenment on offer out there… you know who I’m talking about… until next Tuessssssday.

When I got home an hour later to edit it, before I could get the file off of my shiny Apple iPod, the hard drive failed on me, yet again. Sometimes it corrects itself in a couple of days, so I’ve been sitting here…. watching the kettle boil… so far – nothing. It’ll be a shame if you don’t get to hear this show, cuz I really think you cats would have dug it. But there you go. See Gilbert and Charlie? I tried to give you want you want but the Universe had other plans. So maybe that’s a sign…

Bah. Hadn’t had any coffee this morning, so I forgot two vital things:

2. Check that the new batteries I put into the microphones were working.

As it turned out, the battery in Bob’s mic was good, but the one in mine was a dud. Which is okay, cuz I’ve got nothing to say, but I’m the one reading out your questions… and so… I’ve amped up my voice (and the voice of our special guest from Toronto, Amy, who said some wonderful stuff but was using my mic most of the time) as much as I can, but it sounds pretty rough. The good news is, Bob sounds clear as crystal. :-)

We tackle your questions from last week and I think Amy summed it up best when she said that the only thing to do is to constantly try to see who it is that is thinking the thoughts. No amount of books, no amount of podcasts, no amount of kissing the hairy feet of the guru will replace the act of quiet observation.

Cam back from getting a tan. Did another show with his Bobness yesterday and tried to get clever and use TWO MICS…. but it didn’t quite work out as I’d hoped. The 2nd mic we used to record Bob was one he had and the recording was murkier than George Bush’s logic. Anyway, I’ve cleaned it up as best as I can, but it still ain’t great. My apologies. Will buy a brand spankin’ new 2nd mic to record him with before next week.

Elliott joins us again today, which is a good thing, because I had to make fun of him for letting Bob get ripped off. Well folks, I tried my best to trick him this morning. I think I nearly got him with the first question. But he just pulled what I call the “laughing guru” trick – you know that one? When you catch these gurus out, they just laugh. Ho Ho Ho. You’re supposed to think “oh my, he is so happy, so free, so unencumbered”, but it’s really a sneaky guru trick, don’t let him fool you.

My iPod died on me about 8 minutes into the recording and I didn’t notice for… oh… 10 minutes. I couldn’t check what was recorded and what wasn’t until tonight, so we covered a few questions in that time which disappeared into the ether. If yours was one of those… sorry… blame it on the intelligence energy. :-)

Driving home from Bob’s this morning, I had the iPod on, and in between podcasts, Abbott & Costello came on with “Who’s On First”, and I decided that it has to be the most advaita of all comedy sketches.

And it also reminded me a lot of talking with Bob. One of the conversations he and I had today when the mic was off was about the nature of language (you get a bit of it on the show) and how some words mean different things to different people. That’s my problem with “intelligence energy” – even though I intuitively understand what Bob means when he says that, I’ve always had to parse the words into something I can understand, because the two words “intelligence” and “energy” have specific associations in my brain. So although Bob’s waying “Who’s on first”, my brain keeps asking “What’s his name?!?!??!”. :-)

On this show we answer your questions from the comments section (well we answer the ones we understand anyway) and I hit Bob with a point of clarification. And we have an encore. Listen and you’ll understand what I’m talking about.
