The Xin Xin Ming (aka the Hsin Hsin Ming) has been on my mind a lot lately so I decided to record myself reading it.

Bob first gave me a copy of this 20 years ago and I still find it to be the clearest writing on “this” that I’ve ever read. As far as I’m concerned, once you’ve heard the Xin Xin Ming, there is nothing left to ask, do or say.

According to Wikipedia:

Xinxin Ming (Xin Xin Ming) (信心銘) (Wade-Giles: Hsin Hsin Ming; Japanese: Shinjinmei (or Shinjin no Mei)) a verse attributed to the Third Chinese Chan (Zen) Patriarch Jianzhi Sengcan 僧璨(?-606) (Wade-Giles: Chien-chih Seng-ts’an; Japanese: Kanchi Sosan), is one of the earliest Chinese Chan expressions of the Buddhist mind training practice. While it has been interpreted as “faith in mind” as opposed to the more common Buddhist faiths present at the time—faith in the Buddha, in the Dharma and in the Sangha, another interpretation suggested by Ho(see below) takes Xinxin (信心) to mean the truthful mind. Still other translations include: Inscription on Trust in the Mind, Verses on the Faith Mind, and On Believing in Mind, as well as others. John McRae (1986:316 n. 64) argues that the title should be translated as “Inscription on Relying on the Mind” or “Inscription of the Perfected Mind”.

The version I’m reading is translated from the Chinese by Richard B. Clarke.

The Great Way is not difficult

for those who have no preferences.

When love and hate are both absent

everything becomes clear and undisguised.

Make the smallest distinction, however,

and heaven and earth are set infinitely apart.

If you wish to see the truth

then hold no opinions for or against anything.

To set up what you like against what you dislike

is the disease of the mind.

When the deep meaning of things is not understood,

the mind’s essential peace is disturbed to no avail.

The Way is perfect like vast space

where nothing is lacking and nothing is in excess.

Indeed, it is due to our choosing to accept or reject

that we do not see the true nature of things.

Live neither in the entanglements of outer things,

nor in inner feelings of emptiness.

Be serene in the oneness of things and such

erroneous views will disappear by themselves.

When you try to stop activity by passivity

your very effort fills you with activity.

As long as you remain in one extreme or the other

you will never know Oneness.

Those who do not live in the single Way

fail in both activity and passivity,

assertion and denial.

To deny the reality of things

is to miss their reality;

To assert the emptiness of things

is to miss their reality.

The more you talk and think about it,

the further astray you wander from the truth.

Stop talking and thinking,

and there is nothing you will not be able to know.

To return to the root is to find meaning,

but to pursue appearances is to miss the source. icon

At the moment of inner enlightenment

there is a going beyond appearance and emptiness.

The changes that appear to occur in the empty world

we call real only because of our ignorance.

Do not search for the truth;

only cease to cherish opinions.

Do not remain in the dualistic state.

Avoid such pursuits carefully.

If there is even a trace of this and that,

of right and wrong,

the mind-essence will be lost in confusion.

Although all dualities come from the One,

do not be attached even to this One.

When the mind exists undisturbed in the Way,

nothing in the world can offend.

And when a thing can no longer offend,

it ceases to exist in the old way.

When no discriminating thoughts arise,

the old mind ceases to exist.

When thought objects vanish,

the thinking-subject vanishes:

As when the mind vanishes, objects vanish.

Things are objects because of the subject (mind):

the mind (subject) is such because of things (object).

Understand the relativity of these two

and the basic reality: the unity of emptiness.

In this Emptiness the two are indistinguishable

and each contains in itself the whole world.

If you do not discriminate between coarse and fine

you will not be tempted to prejudice and opinion.

To live in the Great Way is neither easy nor difficult.

But those with limited views are fearful and irresolute:

the faster they hurry, the slower they go.

And clinging (attachment) cannot be limited:

Even to be attached to the idea of enlightenment

is to go astray.

Just let things be in their own way

and there will be neither coming nor going.

Obey the nature of things (your own nature)

and you will walk freely and undisturbed.

When the thought is in bondage the truth is hidden

for everything is murky and unclear.

And the burdensome practice of judging

brings annoyance and weariness.

What benefit can be derived

from distinctions and separations?

If you wish to move in the One Way

do not dislike even the world of senses and ideas.

Indeed, to accept them fully

is identical with enlightenment.

The wise man strives to no goals

but the foolish man fetters himself.

There is one Dharma, not many.

Distinctions arise

from the clinging needs of the ignorant.

To seek Mind with the (discriminating) mind

is the greatest of all mistakes.

Rest and unrest derive from illusion;

with enlightenment

there is no liking and disliking.

All dualities come from ignorant inference.

They are like dreams or flowers in air -

foolish to try to grasp them.

Gain and loss, right and wrong,

such thoughts must

finally be abolished at once.

If the eye never sleeps,

all dreams will naturally cease.

If the mind makes no discriminations,

the ten thousand things are as they are,

of single essence.

To understand the mystery of this One-essence

is to be released from all entanglements.

When all things are seen equally

the timeless Self-essence is reached,

No comparisons or analogies are possible

in this causeless, relationless state.

Consider movement stationary

and the stationary in motion,

both movement and rest disappear.

When such dualities cease to exist

Oneness itself cannot exist.

To this ultimate finality

no law or description applies.

For the unified mind in accord with the way

all self-centered striving ceases.

Doubts and irresolutions vanish

and life in true faith is possible.

With a single stroke we are freed from bondage:

Nothing clings to us and we hold to nothing.

All is empty, clear, self-illuminating,

with no exertion of the mind’s power.

Here thought, feeling,

knowledge and imagination are of no value.

In this world of suchness

there is neither self nor other-than-self.

To come directly into harmony with this reality

just say when doubt rises “not two”.

In this “not two” nothing is separate,

nothing is excluded.

No matter when or where,

enlightenment means entering this truth.

And this truth is beyond extension

or diminution in time and space:

In it a single thought is ten thousand years.

Emptiness here, emptiness there,

but the infinite universe

stands always before your eyes.

Infinitely large and infinitely small;

no difference, for definitions have vanished

and no boundaries are seen.

So too with Being and non-Being.

Don’t waste time in doubts and arguments

That have nothing to do with this.

One thing, all things,

move among and intermingle without distinction.

To live in this realization

is to be without anxiety about non-perfection.

To live in this faith is the road to non-duality,

because the non-dual is one with the trusting mind.

Words!

The Way is beyond language,

for in it there is

no yesterday

no tomorrow

no today.

We don’t have any “Bob smack” for you yet, so you’ll have to put up with Steve and I rabbiting on about James Brown, Leonard Cohen, the Hsin Hsin Ming, and why Cameron thinks Advaitans are the most boring people on the planet.

Here’s the James Brown BMW commercial I talk about:

So I was chatting with Bob the other day and I asked him if Eliot was still recording the regular sessions at Bob’s house. When I found out he was, I asked Bob if it would be alright to post one up here every now and again. He’s was fine with it so I emailed Eliot and he dropped a couple of recent sessions onto a DVD and mailed them to me.

This is an experiment I guess. It’s pretty long - 91 minutes. And the fidelity isn’t great. But it’s Bob in his natural habitat. Let me know if you’d like to hear more shows like this.

Scott Adams of The Dilbert Blog and his post on free will
The Economist’s recent article on Free Will

John Dobson’s article on Science and Advaita

I’ll apologize in advance for the poor sound quality on this show. I think I moved away from the microphone a couple of times to read stuff on the screen and it caused problems. Well I WOULD apologize, except I don’t have free will so… nothing I could do about it I guess. :-)

Want to come on the show? Now you can. Here’s how it’s going to work.

Step 1. I will post up the future schedule (a few weeks in advance) to a Google Calendar. You can view it here.

Step 2. If you want to come on any particular episode, look to the associated post up on the Advaita Forum. A link to the forum will be in each calendar entry so it should be pretty straightforward.

Step 3. Reply to the forum post for the episode you want to join, with your name, Skype ID and the topic you’d like to discuss.

Step 4. When it comes time to record the show, we’ll hook you in via Skype!

Hopefully that isn’t too hard to follow. Hit me up here with any questions.

We’ve been laughing so hard about the whole thing it’s been a lot of fun. So there is no Bob on this show, no Eliot, nobody who is enlightened, nobody who has “the understanding”, nobody at all in fact. Just a couple of dudes, sitting drinking tequila, having a laugh.

Well it was fun while it lasted but I think the general consensus today was that this show has run dry. There’s nothing left to say. No questions left to ask. No new answers left to give you. Nothing new to say that Bob hasn’t said ad infinitum over the last 27 shows. So thanks for tuning in over the last 6 months and for playing The Advaita Game ™.

Let me summarize what we have learned from his Bobness…
Find out who is asking the question and the questions will disappear.

You are already that which you seek.

Wow, I couldn’t believe it when I realized it’s been three weeks since you’ve had your dose of advaita goodness. I know there are other sources of advaita out there, but surely you all agree that this show is the most advaita of all advaita shows? We out-advaita the lot of ‘em.

Anyway… enough bullshit, let’s get on with it.

Guests this week include:

Laya from Super-Cannes, France
Eliot

The main themes today were about small “i” versus big “I”, holding ones breath, and orgies. Yes, you read right, ORGIES. Laya has some experience in that area and once you’ve heard her accent, you’ll agree with me that she has a HUGE career as a guru ahead of her if she combines the accent with the orgies. Anyway… you’ll need to listen to the show.

I’ve tried to answer as many of your questions from the last couple of weeks as I could but, if I missed anyone, please re-post your question to this week’s show so I can find it next week!

Unfortunately, I have to report that The Advaita Show has dropped to #55 in the Podcast Alley rankings, so you won’t be getting another videocast this month (got to get us into the Top Ten)! Ohhhhhhhhh…. I know. But there is still a week left so, if you haven’t voted already in the month of February, you are letting the team down! Vote now by clicking here!

Bah. Hadn’t had any coffee this morning, so I forgot two vital things:
1. Take the video camera
2. Check that the new batteries I put into the microphones were working.

As it turned out, the battery in Bob’s mic was good, but the one in mine was a dud. Which is okay, cuz I’ve got nothing to say, but I’m the one reading out your questions… and so… I’ve amped up my voice (and the voice of our special guest from Toronto, Amy, who said some wonderful stuff but was using my mic most of the time) as much as I can, but it sounds pretty rough. The good news is, Bob sounds clear as crystal. :-)

We tackle your questions from last week and I think Amy summed it up best when she said that the only thing to do is to constantly try to see who it is that is thinking the thoughts. No amount of books, no amount of podcasts, no amount of kissing the hairy feet of the guru will replace the act of quiet observation.

Hey folks

Cam back from getting a tan. Did another show with his Bobness yesterday and tried to get clever and use TWO MICS…. but it didn’t quite work out as I’d hoped. The 2nd mic we used to record Bob was one he had and the recording was murkier than George Bush’s logic. Anyway, I’ve cleaned it up as best as I can, but it still ain’t great. My apologies. Will buy a brand spankin’ new 2nd mic to record him with before next week.

That disclaimer out of the way… should you choose to go ahead and listen… we’ve tried to answer some of your questions from the last couple of weeks, including:

what’s Bob’s reality
is there awareness after death
how do you “use the mind” if “the mind” is just ego
If there is no such thing as FREE WILL, can there be such a thing as CREATIVITY?

And then my website borked itself, and we had to stop before we could answer all of your questions. Probably a good thing seeing as the recording was also borked.

We talked about a range of facets of Bob’s message, with emphasis
on the themes of “There is only That… everything is That” and
“Nothing to get… you already are That… the futility of
seeking… it can’t be grasped via conceptualization”. It’s
punctuated sometimes with our attempts at humour.

Cameron says:

Thanks, Eliot, for keeping Bob off the streets while I’m away. You know the old saying: An Idle Guru Is the Devil’s Plaything.

Elliott joins us again today, which is a good thing, because I had to make fun of him for letting Bob get ripped off. Bob wanted a little device for recording his thoughts (because he can’t type fast enough) and ended up paying $720! But that’s okay, E & B got their own back on me when my iPod died in the middle of the show!! F#*%#$(*@ iPods.

Anyway… fear not, I went back and re-recorded the stuff we lost due to hardware failure.

So here it is… all of your questions answered by the laughing guru. From memory we talked about (in no particular order):

if Bob loses his temper

what he perceives when his mind body is awake or asleep

reverence in Advaita

trying to notice awareness

And NO - I didn’t have a second mic for him today but we did realize AFTER we recorded the show that he has a spare mic there himself so… the next time it’ll be better. BUT… I’m on holidays for a couple of weeks so, unless I can convince Elliott to stand in for me, this is the last show until the end of December folks!

Lucky for you we have 14 episodes that you can listen to over and over while I’m sunning my illusory self in Queensland.

Well folks, I tried my best to trick him this morning. I think I nearly got him with the first question. But he just pulled what I call the “laughing guru” trick - you know that one? When you catch these gurus out, they just laugh. Ho Ho Ho. You’re supposed to think “oh my, he is so happy, so free, so unencumbered”, but it’s really a sneaky guru trick, don’t let him fool you.

My iPod died on me about 8 minutes into the recording and I didn’t notice for… oh… 10 minutes. I couldn’t check what was recorded and what wasn’t until tonight, so we covered a few questions in that time which disappeared into the ether. If yours was one of those… sorry… blame it on the intelligence energy. :-)

The Advaita Show #011 (MP3 - 14MB - 40min)

>LISTEN TO THE PODCAST HERE

Driving home from Bob’s this morning, I had the iPod on, and in between podcasts, Abbott & Costello came on with “Who’s On First”, and I decided that it has to be the most advaita of all comedy sketches.

And it also reminded me a lot of talking with Bob. One of the conversations he and I had today when the mic was off was about the nature of language (you get a bit of it on the show) and how some words mean different things to different people. That’s my problem with “intelligence energy” - even though I intuitively understand what Bob means when he says that, I’ve always had to parse the words into something I can understand, because the two words “intelligence” and “energy” have specific associations in my brain. So although Bob’s waying “Who’s on first”, my brain keeps asking “What’s his name?!?!??!”. :-)

On this show we answer your questions from the comments section (well we answer the ones we understand anyway) and I hit Bob with a point of clarification. And we have an encore. Listen and you’ll understand what I’m talking about.

Thanks for listening and for all of the comments folks. I was telling Bob that this podcast gets WAY more comments and feedback than any other show on The Podcast Network…. which indicates to me just how crazy you all are.

We tackle questions like…

> How does Advaita help with the day-to-day process of making life decisions?
> How does Bob live out his day-to-day life?
> Does “free will” exist and for whom?
> How to give up all identification with the self, if the mind is part of the problem?
> What Bob thinks about Douglas Harding?
> What Bob things about Advaita teachers slagging off other Advaita teachers?!!!

Cameron also asks the question - who is the most enlightened cartoon character of all time? Can you guess?

Don’t forget you can also leave audio questions or comments using my SKYPE line. My SKYPE ID is “cameronreilly”. Leave a voicemail for me on that line and I’ll add it to the show!
